Two Hikers Rescued by HSC-25 After Fall

10 October 2018

From Commander, Amphibious Force 7th Fleet Public Affairs

ANDERSEN AIR BASE, Guam (October 7, 2018) -- Two hikers were rescued by Guam-based "Island Knight" Sailors from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 25 after a fall Oct. 7.

Two hikers were rescued by Guam-based “Island Knight” Sailors from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 25 after a fall Oct. 7.

At approximately 3:35 pm, HSC-25 launched a rescue helicopter to assist two hikers, one who had fallen approximately 50 ft. while hiking in the Tarzan Falls area in Santa Rita, Guam.  Both hikers were recovered via helicopter hoist and delivered to Naval Hospital Guam in stable condition.  The rescue mission was led by Aircraft Commander Lt. Scott Brady.

“It was a challenging rescue all around,” said Brady.  “I had an exceptional enlisted crew to run it. They executed a textbook overland search and rescue despite the challenges of hoisting a litter through a 120 foot jungle canopy.  Petty Officer Szabo, Petty Officer Bristol, and Petty Officer Derrick are true professionals with a passion for this mission and helping the people of Guam.”

The incident was the 22nd emergency call to HSC-25 by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam and marks 17 survivor recoveries during search and rescue and medical evacuations in 2018 to date.

“This was a team effort from the HSC-25 Island Knights,” said HSC-25 Executive Officer, Cmdr. Christopher Carreon. "All our aircrews train day in and day out so they can execute this mission.  Meanwhile, our maintenance team, which is the best in the HSC community, continually provides aircraft to execute our SAR mission. Great job all around!"

HSC-25 provides a multi-mission rotary wing capability for units in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations and maintains a Guam-based 24-hour search and rescue and medical evacuation capability, directly supporting U.S. Coast Guard and Joint Region Marianas. HSC-25 is the Navy’s only forward-deployed MH-60S expeditionary squadron.
