The guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99) departed Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth, Oct. 10, after completing a scheduled port visit.
Farragut accompanied the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) during the visit. The presence of the two ships served as a reminder of the enduring partnership between the two countries as well as the mutual commitment to regional security and stability.
“Farragut continues to be honored and grateful for the hospitability of our host nations as we continue to conduct operations in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations,” said Cmdr. Casey Baker, Farragut’s commanding officer. “We extend our deepest gratitude to the city of Portsmouth for their warm welcoming of our ship and the Harry S. Truman. The visit was a great chance for our Sailors to unwind from time spent at sea while also building a stronger relationship with the people of England.”
The visit presented many opportunities for Farragut Sailors as they were able to tour the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton. Sailors were also able to travel to London and see famous sites such as the London Eye and Buckingham Palace, as well as visit Wiltshire to view the historic Stonehenge monument.
According to Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Tyler Eoff, the highlight of his time in England was a tour of Emirate Stadium, the third largest football stadium in England and home to the Arsenal Football Club.
“As a kid growing up and well into my years in college prior to joining the Navy, soccer - or football as they call it in England - was a huge part of my life, from playing it to watching it,” said Eoff. “When I heard we would be able to travel to London, I knew I had to visit one of England’s largest stadiums and receive a tour to see all the little details which you don’t get to see unless you’re there in person.”
Farragut is currently deployed to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group. With USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as the flagship, deployed strike group units include staffs, ships and aircraft of Carrier Strike Group Eight (CSG 8), Destroyer Squadron Two Eight (DESRON 28) and Carrier Air Wing One (CVW-1).
U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
