USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) is heading back out to the North Atlantic after completing a four-day port visit in Portsmouth, England, Oct. 06-10.

“Our Sailors were overwhelmed by the welcome we received across this beautiful isle,” said Commander, Harry S Truman, Capt. Nick Dienna. “This visit was a phenomenal way to build on the long-standing partnership we have with our Royal Navy counterparts, as well as to forge new friendships with our gracious British hosts.”

Having previously operated across the northern waters of both Second and Sixth Fleet for nearly 40 days, many Harry S. Truman Sailors made the most of the visit. Some Sailors took a train to London or visited historical landmarks while others stayed in Portsmouth to a catch a glimpse of various historical sites, to include a church whose roof was destroyed during bombings in WWII. No matter where Truman’s Sailors went, most left with a better understanding of British culture.

“I had the pleasure of visiting Stonehenge and Bath on one of my tours, and I was blown away by my experience,” said Aviation Electronics Technician Airman Justin Vasquez. “The people were incredible and the sights were unforgettable. This will definitely go down as one of my favorite experiences in the Navy.”

Electrician’s Mate 1st Class Stephen Campbell shares Vasquez’s sentiments, stating that this port visit eclipsed all expectations.

“My experience in the United Kingdom was all really fascinating to me,” said Campbell. “I grew up in the middle of nowhere, so getting the opportunity to see things like the Elizabeth Tower, the Buckingham Palace and Stonehenge – those are all places I’d never thought I’d get to see – so getting the chance to see these places was both awe-inspiring and exciting.”

Following the port visit the Harry S. Truman Strike Group will continue operating in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations before reuniting with the British and other NATO allies for Trident Juncture 2018, the largest exercise of its kind in over two decades. 

Adm. James G. Foggo III, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (CNE-CNA) and commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples, Italy, spoke about the exercise during an Oct 02 podcast – “On the Horizon: Navigating the European and African Theaters,” in which he noted, “Trident Juncture 18 is a valuable platform for us to work with partners and exchange best practices and work together as an alliance to address crises.”

Currently operating in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations, Harry S. Truman will continue to foster cooperation with regional allies and partners, and remain vigilant, agile and dynamic.
