Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Bahrain recently established a Navy Food Management Team (NFMT) to provide expanded culinary support to operational units in the 5th and 6th Fleets.
“The Navy Food Management Team is the latest addition to NAVSUP FLC Bahrain and its formation allows us to offer one more of NAVSUP’s products and services to Sailors and joint warfighters in this part of the world,” said Capt. Terrel Fisher, commanding officer of NAVSUP FLC Bahrain. “Chow, especially when Sailors are a long way from home, is one of the most important factors to health, morale and, therefore, mission readiness. Every little place where we can add value supports the Sailor and enhances fleet operational capability.”
The NAVSUP FLC Bahrain NFMT supports sixteen 5th Fleet afloat units and shore-based commands, and more than 15,000 Sailors and Marines transiting through the NAVCENT area of responsibility annually. Additionally, the NFMT provides assistance to 6th Fleet food service programs both afloat and ashore. This support includes menu, equipment, sanitation and financial management training, and also helps commands implement the Navy’s Go For Green® healthy-options menu initiative.
The first member of the new NFMT is Culinary Specialist Senior Chief Lakesia Jackson. Senior Chief’s 19 years as a Culinary Specialist includes tours on five ships and a tour with NAVSUP FLC Norfolk’s NFMT. Naval Support Activity Bahrain opened its first galley on Sept. 30, and Jackson ensured all administrative requirements were met. Senior Chief Jackson’s team will soon expand to enable frequent, dedicated attention to the many galleys and commands operating throughout the region.
“I was very excited to take this billet and fill a culinary role that had been missing,” said Jackson. “I’m looking forward to getting this program off the ground in the right way and mentoring junior culinary specialists.”
By NAVSUP publication, “NFMTs are responsible for providing training and assistance to support afloat and ashore food service operations in order to improve the quality of food service and maximize health and performance of the warfighter and establish economy and effectiveness of food service operations.”
NAVSUP FLC Bahrain is one of eight FLCs under Commander, NAVSUP. Headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter.
