A fascination with the field of gastroenterology has driven LCDR Brent Lacey to strive for excellence in the care of his patients, which has recently earned him the recognition of the Captain Walter J. Coyle Award for Clinical Gastroenterology (GI).

The peer-nominated award is presented annually to a Navy Gastroenterologist "who embodies the best qualities of an outstanding clinician. The recipient...should display a balance of compassion, keen clinical acumen, and a dedication to continuous professional growth."

Lacey said the award, being peer selected, was "flabbergasting" for him, and a complete surprise.

“There are relatively few opportunities for physicians to be recognized for their clinical work.  To be recognized by my peers for excellence in clinical gastroenterology is deeply meaningful,” said Lacey. “It offers validation of my clinical skills and shows appreciation for a lot of hard work from a group of peers who are in a position to judge the value of my contribution to Navy Gastroenterology.”

The Dallas-raised physician has been at NMCCL for four months and the United States Navy a total of 12 years; four in the reserves during medical school and nine active duty.

The choice to join the Navy was spiritually guided, Lacey explained.

“After college, I spent a week in Yellowstone National Park, hiking and seeking God's guidance for my career and my life. I felt strongly that He was calling me to serve in the military,” said Lacey. “After I left the Park, I called a recruiter and joined the Navy.  I've never looked back, and I've always been confident in that decision.”

During medical school rotations Lacey found passion for the field of GI and has found a great deal of gratification helping patients manage not only their GI diseased, but a variety of other health issues.

His time in medical school found him doing rotations with the namesake of the award, CAPT Coyle.

Lacey explained the experience he gained from shadowing Coyle was irreplaceable and makes winning the award that much more special.

“It never occurred to me to think that I would be considered for this award.  I'm humbled and deeply grateful to my peers for their vote of confidence.”
