Religious Programs Specialist 3rd Class Adey Oluwadamilola has come a long way in a short time.

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria today he has a dual citizenship. He’s been stationed at Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) for close to a year and he’s earned the TSCHR Blue Jacket of the Quarter award twice.

“I chose the RP rating because it gave me the unique opportunity to work with chaplains, Sailors and Marines, but most importantly to serve those in need,” said Oluwadamilola.   

Prior to joining the TSCHR team, Oluwadamilola was a novice when it came to public speaking. Today, he briefs students who transition weekly, providing support by varied staff embedded at each of TSC’s five sites.

“Previous experiences gave RP3 Oluwadamilola a good foundation of in-rate skills, whereas TSCHR has uniquely challenged and encouraged RP3’s professional growth and leadership,” said Lt. Cary Shinn, TSCHR command chaplain. “He now has the skill sets to directly contribute to the students’ program awareness, student engagement activities, building relations and contributing to student development. This is key for TSCHR’s distinct role of student support.”

“When I reported to the TSCHR Chaplain’s Office, I was not a public speaker," said Oluwadamilola. "Through repetition and with the help of my mentors Chaplain Shinn, Senior Chief Religious Programs Specialist Shari Chisholm, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, Norfolk and RP1 Matthew Malloy, Naval Station Norfolk, public speaking is part of my weekly routine."

Additionally, Oluwadamilola is heavily involved with the Chaplain’s Religious Enrichment Development Operation, Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions, Naval Air Station Oceana Child Youth Program, Fleet and Family Services, Life Skills, and the administrative needs of Shinn. 

“I’m always willing to help anyone that needs my help—it’s naturally just the right thing to do," said Oluwadamilola. “Some students just need you to listen, so all I can do is reach out to them and make sure my presence is known.”

“Many of the area chapels have mentored and assisted Petty Officer Oluwadamilola with his unique role as an independent duty RP, and he’s making a phenomenal difference with the students," said Shinn. "The dynamic environment of TSCHR has encouraged his growth through exposure.”

In 2018, TSCHR provided support to 72,000 students and associated TSCHR staff throughout the Hampton Roads area of responsibility.
