Last week, the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain’s Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) disposition services team donated an excess amount of Department of Defense (DoD) furniture to a local charity.
Approximately 100 beds, 150 night stands and several other home pieces, which would have been disposed of as waste, were transferred to the Bahrain Red Crescent Society.
All of the furniture was provided by the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites (NGIS), and was the result of a demolition refurbishment project.
“Good community relations are important because when we take an active interest in the well-being of the local community,” said Shireen Washington, Defense Logistics Agency disposition service representative. “It aides in maintaining a military-beneficial relationship and helps earn public support of our military presence here in Bahrain.”
“The charity supports over 4000 people a year [and] the numbers hike up during Ramadan,” said Washington. “On a monthly basis, they support 400 families that are living well below the poverty line. This donation will help house and furnish the homes of many of those families.”
According to its website, the Bahrain Red Crescent Society is a volunteer charity founded in the 1970s. Its aim is to provide social services, humanitarian aid and health awareness, as well as promote employment and social rehabilitation services.
The society lists principles which coincide with other Red Crescent and Red Cross societies, including humanity, impartiality, unity, charity and internationality, to name a few.
