Staff at Center for Surface Combat Systems Unit (CSCSU) Great Lakes concluded their week-long collection event to benefit Warren Township Food Pantry Nov. 21.
Organized by CSCSU’s Petty Officer Association (POA), the command collected three pallets of boxed and canned food.
“Our command Petty Officer Association decided to get involved to help our local community who may not be as fortunate during the holiday period,” said Gunner’s Mate 1st Class Bryan Lopez, leading petty officer of CSCSU Great Lakes GM A School and president of the command’s Petty Officer Association. “We are always searching for ways to get involved and make a difference in our community. Assisting the Warren Township Food Pantry helping those less fortunate is always a worthy endeavor.”
Various canned goods and non-perishable items ranging from green beans, corn, mashed potatoes and stuffing have been donated. The POA will be delivering the items collected on Wednesday afternoon.
“We have the entire Petty Officer Association organizing the event but it wouldn’t have been possible without the entire command’s support and generous contributions,” Lopez said. “With the items collected all around the command, we ensure families who are in need are able to provide a meal for their families.”
Assisting the Warren Township Food Pantry is only one of many community related events the command gets involved with throughout the year.
"The Sailors of CSCSU Great Lakes dedication for volunteering and their commitment to supporting our local civilian community is extremely commendable," said Chief Gunner’s Mate Brandon Gomes, leading chief petty officer of CSCSU Great Lakes Training/Learning Standards and vice president of the command’s Chief Petty Officers Mess. "Giving back to those who have gone above and beyond to support our staff and military personnel here in Great Lakes is, and will continue to be, a primary mission for our command.”
