Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Command (NAVFAC EXWC) has announced its selection for the 2019 Military Engineer of the Year Award.

Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Command (NAVFAC EXWC) has announced its selection for the 2019 Military Engineer of the Year Award.

Lt. Cmdr. Alfred M. Nuzzolo, deputy department head for NAVFAC EXWC’s Capital Improvements Business Line Department, was selected as Military Engineer of the Year for his leadership and dedication to the NAVFAC enterprise.

“It is an unparalleled honor to be recognized as the Military Engineer of the Year for a command as respected and forward-thinking as NAVFAC EXWC,” said Capt. Michael Saum, EXWC commanding officer. “Lieutenant Commander Nuzzolo’s intellect and technical excellence are unequivocally deserving of engineer of the year.”

Award recipients were evaluated in the areas of engineering achievements, civic and humanitarian activities, professional registration, continuing education, and professional and technical society involvement.

With over 18 years of service in the U.S. Navy, Nuzzolo advanced to a top-level managerial position, now overseeing valuable NAVFAC EXWC projects within the Capital Improvements Business Line that serve as the direct support system to the entire lifecycle of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps facilities.

“I cannot take full credit for this award, as I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a team full of extraordinarily-talented individuals,” said Nuzzolo. “It is truly an honor to work with brilliant minds, and without them, these noteworthy projects would not come to fruition.”

Nuzzolo also attributes his feats to his late father, who he described as an expert problem -solver. As a young man, his father taught him the importance of critical thinking, sparking his early interest in engineering, and later acquired dual degrees in both computer and civil engineering.

In addition to his professional obligations, Nuzzolo is the First Vice President of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) of the Oxnard/Ventura Post - an organization providing education and professional development for members who bridge the multi-disciplined integrator of military, public, private and academic national infrastructure with viable solutions for America’s national security.

NAVFAC EXWC is a command of more than 1,300 dedicated federal employees, contractors, and military personnel who provide specialized facilities engineering, technology solutions, and life-cycle management of expeditionary equipment to the Navy, Marine Corps, federal agencies, and other Department of Defense supported commands.
