Sailors from Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego and their families participated in the laying of wreaths at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Dec. 15.

The cemetery, where over 100,000 service members are buried, is situated in San Diego’s Point Loma neighborhood overlooking San Diego Bay, which U.S. Navy vessels regularly transit.

“Laying wreaths brings everyone together, no matter who you are, and makes you realize that everyone's liberty, choice and freedom was given to us by the ultimate sacrifice that these men and women made,” said Information Systems Technician 1st Class Michael Garza, who helped orchestrate IWTC San Diego’s event contribution. “This is one of the few ways we can give back to our heroes in remembering and honoring them. It really means a lot to those people out there laying the wreaths, as it should to everyone.”

The event was hosted by Wreaths Across America, which partners with companies and organizations around the country to provide wreaths to help preserve the memory of military veterans at more than 1,400 locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Wreaths Across America’s mission touches the lives of thousands of school, scout, civic and religious groups across the country through fundraising for wreath sponsorships. 

"I wanted to give back, because there are so many veterans without family to remember their sacrifice,” offered Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) Zachary Schulz. “I wanted to do my part to remind everyone that these brave men and women are not forgotten. I was very happy to see family involvement, so that this heritage can be passed on to our children.”

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

With four school house commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past two years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services.
