Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Sailors and civilian employees have volunteered their time to impart real world knowledge to students who are enrolled in schools throughout Central Pennsylvania since the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

More than 30 Sailors and civilian employees assigned to NAVSUP, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, have volunteered their time to impart real world knowledge and expertise to students who are enrolled in schools throughout Central Pennsylvania since the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

The efforts of these professionals are channeled through Junior Achievement (JA), a global non-profit organization whose mission is to educate students in grades K-12 about developmental concepts through hands-on programs.

Lt. Cmdr. Victor Cunningham, NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support program manager, said his visit to Cumberland Valley High School on April 6 was his 15th time volunteering.

"JA does an amazing job setting up events across the various schools," said Cunningham. "That, matched by the excitement and energy of the students, makes it a very rewarding success. I look forward to participating in more JA events while I'm here in Central Pennsylvania."

"Led by their own workforce experiences, our volunteers, like those from NAVSUP, guide the students through several of our organization's fun and engaging learning activities," said Allison Kierce, JA South Central Pennsylvania Vice President of Volunteer Engagement. "These activities are designed to foster personal and professional development so they can be successful throughout their academic and professional careers."

The learning activities are organized into three structured curricula.

JA's YES! curriculum helps students realize the importance of financial and career decisions. REAL Life is a financial literacy program. JA's third curriculum is designed to inspire students' interest in the career fields involving science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

"Volunteering is important to me and I try to do so as often as I can," said Lt. Cmdr. Phillip Mogilevsky, NAVSUP, who led a "Budget Builder" activity in March 2018 with junior and senior-year students at Camp Hill High School. He said it was his first time volunteering with JA.

"From the years I've served as a Supply Corps Officer, operations research analyst and manager of my personal financial portfolio, I felt I was able to share a good bit of knowledge," he said. "Basically, I tried to instill in the students that if you're smart with your money, you can be financially secure and cover all your bases."

NAVSUP personnel, like Mogilevsky and Cunningham, are among the 7,000 JA volunteers worldwide who are helping make key developmental concepts relatable to tomorrow's professionals, entrepreneurs and civic leaders, particularly those living and learning in Central Pennsylvania.
