Children play a vital role in the success of Navy families. Sailors and civilians assigned to the Chief of Naval Personnel (CNP) staff are recognizing the contributions of children this April during Month of the Military Child.

The purpose of the month-long observance is to acknowledge the unique challenges experienced by military children and recognize their role in the overall health of military families.

The Month of the Military Child commemoration was established in 1986 by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. Today, service members continue to honor children through special events, and incorporate themes into their daily duties and responsibilities aimed at providing quality service and support for children.

"It's good to work hard and focus on the mission, and it's also important to prioritize our children and our families; they should be on top of your things to do," said Chief Yeoman Yezabeth Cuevas, assigned to the CNP staff. "The new generation is going to enjoy the programs the Navy is providing for families and the activities provided to kids on bases. The new generation is going to be in great hands."

As part of Sailor 2025 career readiness initiatives, the Navy has established a number of policies aimed at improving the quality of life for Navy families. The Navy expanded child development center hours to better accommodate Sailors' work schedules. In addition, the Navy is working to update dual-military, dual-professional spouse and single parent policies to improve stability and work-life balance.

CNP staff members hosted a 'Bring Your Child to Work Day', March 30, which included kid-friendly games and activities, in addition to food, prizes and an egg hunt.

April is also a time to recognize the importance of safeguarding children. President Donald J. Trump proclaimed the month of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The purpose of the proclamation is to recognize the importance of families and communities working together to prevent abuse and neglect, and to encourage positive behavior, encouragement and emotional well-being of children and families.

Statistics from Childhelp.org indicate that a report of child abuse is made every ten seconds. Additionally, every year, more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children.

CNP Sailors and civilians are dedicated to doing their part in raising awareness, in order to help reduce child abuse.
