Sailors and Marines assigned to the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) visited A.D. Henderson Elementary School to speak with students and teachers as part of Fleet Week Port Everglades 2018, May 1.

While at the school, the 10 Sailors and Marines went from one classroom to the other to talk to the Florida youth about their jobs and life in the military.

"It was fantastic to be able to interact with the kids and see their inquisitive nature," said Chief Fire Controlman Misty Wiggers. "We went into the different classes and introduced ourselves then engaged with them on a bunch of different topics regarding the military, Navy and our jobs."

The visit provided an opportunity for the children to learn about the people who serve in the armed forces.

"The kids actually engaged with us really well," said Operations Specialist Seaman Recruit Keely-Ann Bailey. "I think it's important for them to understand that we aren't just here to sweep out the bad guys. We're also here to protect them and their families or provide humanitarian assistance if need be. It's important for them to grow up knowing that we are here for them."

Bob Marks, Vice President for Government Affairs at Broward Navy League, said the visit helped to reinforce the lessons and values they teach the students every day.

"When we bring the Sailors and Marines out, one thing I ask them to stress is the importance of teamwork because it's something we stress in schools," Marks said. "We also try to talk about the Good Conduct Medal and how it's important for them to be on their best behavior. We try to tie everything to what they're doing and learning and also teach them what the Navy is about."

Marks said service members and students both get more out of the interaction besides the educational benefit.

"The kids treat the Sailors and Marines like rock stars," Marks said. "As soon as they walk in the door their eyes light right up. It's so cute to see that and I think the Sailors and Marines immediately fall in love with the kids."

There are five more school visits around Broward County scheduled for Fleet Week Port Everglades.

Fleet Week Port Everglades provides an opportunity for the citizens of South Florida and visitors to meet nearly 2,000 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see, firsthand, the latest capabilities of today's sea services.
