HST Arrives in Crete

After 43 consecutive days at sea, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) arrived in Souda Bay, Crete, for a regularly scheduled port visit May 23.
After 43 consecutive days at sea, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) arrived in Souda Bay, Crete, for a regularly scheduled port visit May 23.

The purpose of the visit is to enhance the U.S.'s relationship with Greece, while affording Sailors opportunities to enjoy recreational and cultural opportunities on the island of Crete.

"Just like our operations at sea, we view liberty as an important mission," said Truman Commanding Officer, Capt. Nicholas Dienna. "While our Sailors are excited for some well-deserved time off, we're also looking forward to strengthening our connections with our Hellenic partners and the local community during this visit."

In addition to enjoying the culture and scenery of Greece, Truman Sailors will also work with the local community on a church restoration project. Sailors who volunteer will spend the day painting as well as building fences and playground equipment.

"It's an honor to not only be able to see other countries and cultures, but also to show them our openness as Americans," said Information Technician 1st Class Julia Gray. "To serve in any capacity is always the ultimate reward, and I look forward to the opportunity to help keep those good faith relationships between our two countries alive and well."

Truman is deployed in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, support maritime security operations in support of U.S. national security interests.
