Not many people can say they served their nation for more than five decades; however, for a civilian assigned to Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR), he can.

Oscar Jose enlisted in the Navy November 1966, under the Tydings-McDuffie Act, also referred to as the Philippine Independence Act.

Jose, who served on active duty 1966-1997, has applied his positive attitude, dedication and work ethic he learned during his Navy career throughout his tenure as a Navy civilian.

While in the Navy, Jose worked his way up from steward to force career counselor and force master chief petty officer, Commander, Navy Activities United Kingdom.

In February 2000, Jose started his civil service career at Fleet Training Center (FTC) as a GS-6, assistant quota and student control officer. Once FTC was disestablished, Jose began working for Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR).

According to Lynwood Hardy, TSCHR Norfolk site manager for the past 11 years, "Oscar Jose has made a lasting impression on many Sailors and civilians. We've worked together for over 18 years. He's not only a co-worker, but a great friend. He's a top-notch boss, dedicated family man, and a great person who sincerely cares about the students and the 65 employees that work for him. His hard work and dedication will be remembered as one of the greats. He will be missed, but we wish nothing but the best for him on his new adventure."

Jose will end his career as a GS-13, TSCHR student management director. Additionally, he earned a Bachelor of Science in operations management at the young age of 61.

"I couldn't have come this far without my wife, Linda, and the love and support from our four children," said Jose. "Support from the homefront is so very critical. While I was deployed, my wife made two moves by herself and that's no easy feat, especially with children. She did everything, and for that I am very grateful."

When asked what's next, Jose said he wants to travel with his family and friends, spend quality time with his eight, soon to be nine grandchildren and work on projects at home.

"My job at TSC is taking care of the students and my personnel, and I've done everything I could taking care of my staff and students, and I'm happy knowing I did that," said Jose.

Oscar Jose's official last day at TSCHR is June 29.
