June 18-23, Sailors and civilian personnel from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Fleet Weather Center San Diego, and Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center participated in Navy Week Reno.

Other units involved in Navy Week Reno included the USS Nevada (SSBN 733), USS Constitution, Navy Band Southwest, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1.

Naval Oceanography personnel engaged with the Reno community, fielding several events a day. These included speaking to over 100 children at two Boys and Girls Club locations, where they demonstrated the use of a wave buoy, a scale model of an unmanned ocean glider, and simple science experiments involving pressure crushing a foam cup, and a salt-and freshwater solution separating due to their different densities. Personnel also hosted a question and answer session and read to 40 children at a United Way reading summer camp where the most popular question children asked was "are you pilots?"

"This was a great opportunity to spread the word about Naval Oceanography in a community where the Navy doesn't have very much visibility, as most people don't know that the Navy has scientists that study and forecast the weather," said Aerographer's Mate 1st Class (AG1) Brett Myers, a local of nearby Carson City, Nev.

Naval Oceanography volunteered with several organizations, including the Ronald McDonald house, a charity that provides housing for the families of ill children, and the Washoe County Meals on Wheels meal delivery program. AG1 Myers and AG2 Sean Leonhardy, both currently stationed at Fleet Weather Center in San Diego, Calif., also appeared on the local news to deliver the evening weather forecast.

To foster professional ties with the civilian meteorology community, personnel visited the Desert Research Institute (DRI), the environmental research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, a conglomeration of scientists that applies scientific understanding to the effective management of natural resources in and outside of Nevada. DRI provides real-time meteorological support for test operations at Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division at China Lake, and has conducted research for other government projects as well. Naval Oceanography personnel also visited the National Weather Service's Weather Forecast Office in Reno, which forecasts for the local civilian population and airfields.

Navy Week programs serve as the U.S. Navy's principal outreach effort into areas of the country that lack a significant Navy presence, helping Americans understand that their Navy is deployed around the world, around the clock, ready to defend America at all times.
