Aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), safe operations and mission completion are on the forefront of every Sailor's mind. Additionally, Truman leadership maintains that physical fitness also plays a large part in the success of the ship and its crew.

Aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), safe operations and mission completion are on the forefront of every Sailor’s mind. Additionally, Truman leadership maintains that physical fitness also plays a large part in the success of the ship and its crew.

“Physical fitness is vital to our readiness and ability to accomplish our Nation’s missions,” said  Lt. j.g. Marc Rockwellpate, one of Truman’s command fitness leaders.

In order to prepare for the ship’s upcoming physical readiness test, Harry S. Truman Sailors have been participating in the command’s Fitness Enhancement Program (FEP).

“For Truman, our goal is to help Sailors develop and maintain the physical fitness tools they need to be successful in their personal and professional lives,” said Rockwellpate.

Harry S. Truman is currently hosting group FEP workouts three times a week while in port at Naval Station Norfolk.

“Our current FEP program builds on the basic fitness principles outlined in the Navy’s Physical Readiness Guide,” added Rockwellpate. “The program focuses heavily on push-ups, core, and cardio.”

Rockwellpate believes that the best way to improve in the areas on the Navy’s Physical Readiness Test is to simply perform the exercises that are graded.

“Performing the exercises helps build muscle memory, increase muscular endurance, and can help Sailors overcome any mental hurdles they may experience.” added Rockwellpate.

Leading FEP workouts are Truman’s dedicated Assistant Command Fitness Leaders (ACFL).

“I enjoy being an ACFL, because I get to help people who may struggle fitting good physical fitness into their daily lives,” said Machinist Mate 1st Class Marco Lott. “I help Sailors get better and achieve their physical goals they have set for themselves.”

The FEP program is also designed to help people achieve goals in order to improve their careers.

“I have seen a lot of people achieve goals they have set for themselves and get where they need to be physically so they can advance or transfer,” said Lott.

Truman also offers other programs to help Sailors improve and maintain their physical fitness.

“FEP is just a piece of the puzzle,” said Rockwellpate. “Aboard Truman, we also have many great fitness classes, programs, and challenges available for Sailors. I believe we are lucky to have such a variety of options to achieve our goals.”

Harry S. Truman Sailors have experienced much personal success due to the FEP and fitness programs available on Truman.

“I’ve met a lot of my personal fitness goals, and I’ve seen a lot of improvement on my Physical Readiness Test scores,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 3rd Class Vianey Velez. “Much of my success is due to FEP and fitness programs provided through Truman.”

Harry S. Truman is currently conducting maintenance and training in port at Naval Station Norfolk after returning from a regularly scheduled deployment.
