Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach hosted a System Administrator (SYSADMIN) Job Duty Task Analysis (JDTA) review, July 30 through August 3.

The review included from Sailors and civilians from Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), Special Warfare Community, Naval Information Forces, Center for Information Warfare Training, IWTC Virginia Beach, and multiple other subject matter experts from around the fleet.

The JDTA set out to identify the skills that an information systems technician (IT) needs to perform in the fleet, indexed these skills against the training pipeline, and arrived at three main focal points:

1. What does the fleet expect of an IT who has graduated from SYSADMIN?
2. Identify the gaps between what is expected vice what is being delivered.
3. What are the additional shortfalls?

 "It was amazing to see how the fleet interacts with SPAWAR and those in charge of writing curriculum," said Information Systems Technician 1st Class Loyda Rivera, IWTC Virginia Beach instructor and JDTA participant. "Often times, we would have to remind ourselves that this JDTA wasn't just about one specific course, but all of our courses and being able to build each one from this JDTA."

The team spent numerous hours breaking down the duties and tasks, while members repeatedly said, "What we do here today will impact each of the ‘C’ and ‘F’ schools."

At the conclusion of the JDTA, the groups compiled an extensive list of items to optimize IT training in the schoolhouse and better prepare ITs for the fleet. The team devised solutions and way-ahead plans for all three main focal points.

“Support from System Administrator, Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services, Network Security Vulnerability Technician and Information Systems Security Manager instructors were invaluable,” added Rivera. “We can only hope that the fruits of this labor will be noticeable in the days to come.

"We are proud to host the System Administrator JDTA review,” said Cmdr. Andrew Boyden, commanding officer of IWTC Virginia Beach. “System Administrator is a fundamental ‘C’ school for our ITs, and coupled with the other IT training requirements reviews, this effort is an outstanding way to ensure we are providing ready, relevant learning for the IT rating.”

IWTC Virginia Beach currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contract members who train over 6,400 students every year at five training sites in the Hampton Roads area. It is one of four school houses for Center for Information Warfare Training and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning IW community training.

IWTC Virginia Beach, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct Information Warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
