Capt. Richard Hayes relieved Capt. Dean Vanderley as commanding officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic during a change of command ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia, August 9.
Hayes, a native of Charleston, West Virginia., and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University and received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program.
“This has been one of the most rewarding tours in my career,” said Vanderley. “It has been the highlight of my career and I have looked forward to coming to work every single day. It’s been my pleasure to be your leader and part of your team for the last two years.”
Vanderley recognized the Sailor of the Year for the command as well as two civilians for their hard work.
“The fantastic part about being the commanding officer of NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic is that I have a lot of great people to turn to,” said Vanderley. “Everyone takes a lot of pride in what they do and makes things happen.”
After recognizing the personnel of the command, Hayes went on to read his orders and exchange the customary salute that is given to the incoming commanding officer.
After accepting responsibility for the command, Capt. Hayes went on to greet the command personnel and families in attendance.
“I pledge to NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic my total commitment and very best support,” said Hayes. “I’m looking forward to sharing the fast pace and hard work as we build on the impressive enthusiasm, innovations, energy and accomplishments.”
NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic supports the mission of Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and Commander, Navy Installations Command to enable and enhance Navy combat power by providing the most effective, efficient and cost-wise shore services and support.
