Navy Advancement Center hosts 2018 Chief Selectees

27 August 2018

From Ed Barker

Several groups of prospective Chief Petty Officers from Gulf Coast-area commands visited the Navy Advancement Center (NAC) at Saufley Field August 20-27 as part of their transition training from petty officer 1st class to CPO.

Several groups of petty officer 1st classes, selected for promotion to Chief Petty Officers (CPOs), from Gulf Coast-area commands visited the Navy Advancement Center (NAC) at Saufley Field August 20-27 as part of their transition training from petty officer 1st class to CPO.

The Commanding Officer of the Naval Education and Training Professional Development Center, Capt. Kertreck Brooks, kicked-off the training by reinforcing the important role the new chiefs will have with their Sailors.

“One of the most important jobs for a chief is to share their knowledge and train new junior officers,” said Brooks.  “I’m here today as the Commanding Officer of NETPDC because I had outstanding chiefs to guide and help me throughout my career. Even now as a CO, I’m still learning from them. When these chief selectees pin on their anchors -- they will be leading by example and shaping the fleet of the future.”

Brooks’ current chiefs, senior chiefs and master chiefs at the NAC serve as Military Rating Exam Strategists, and during the tour provided the chief selectees detailed insight into the exam and advancement process; including exam construction, preparation and factors that combine for a Sailor’s Final Multiple Score.

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 1st Class Hugo Echeverritrujillo, a student at the Naval Recruiting Orientation Unit at NAS Pensacola who has been selected for advancement to chief, said as a chief his Sailors will count on him to know the details of the advancement process.

“The visit to the Advancement Center really expanded my knowledge of Profile Sheet breakdown and the importance of Bibliography topics and sub-topics,” said Echeverritrujillo.  “Knowing who writes the exams and how they fit into the Final Multiple Score process will be very beneficial going forward as I now can explain the process. The time spent today at the Advancement Center was well worth the trip.”

Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Launching and Recovery Equipment) Cassie Poepoe, NAC Military Rating Exam Strategist, coordinated the selectee visit and encouraged them to consider returning to Pensacola as exam Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).

“We depend on our Fleet SMEs to determine the content of the E4-E7 rating advancement exams,” said Poepoe.  “The Chief selectees that we briefed today are our future SMEs and now know how vital they are to the process.  They will not only return to their commands with a better understanding of the Advancement System, but they can build on that knowledge by returning to the Advancement Center and being part of our Advancement Exam Readiness Reviews.”

NETPDC, located at Saufley Field Pensacola, provides products and services that enable and enhance education, training, career development, and personnel advancement throughout the Navy.
