COMNAVSEA Visits NUWC Division Keyport

28 August 2018

From Kristin L. Carver

Vice Adm. Tom Moore, commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), visited Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Keyport on Aug. 23 to speak to the workforce, present awards and tour the base.

Vice Adm. Tom Moore, commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), visited Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Keyport Aug. 23 and delivered remarks to the workforce during an all hands call.

“Vice Adm. Moore’s visit was well received and appreciated,” said Cmdr. Carlos Cintron, executive officer, NUWC Division Keyport. “He provided new guidance to a large audience during the all hands and gave our workforce the opportunity to proudly showcase the progress they have made since his last visit.

Moore answered questions from the workforce and presented several warfare center awards to NUWC Division Keyport personnel during his address.

“As the Propel program lead, it was an honor to have Vice Adm. Moore visit Keyport on Thursday and present the Alan J. Dean award for Propel,” said Lindsey Abair, NUWC Division Keyport workforce development team member and Propel program lead. “Through his comments on investing in the workforce, developing our leaders from within and the culture of affordability, he made it clear that development of the workforce is a priority all the way to the top of NAVSEA.”

Following the all hands call and awards presentation, Moore took part in a roundtable discussion with a small group of personnel. This provided him with an opportunity to sit down with representatives from each NUWC Division Keyport department and answer their questions in a more informal setting.

“I was lucky to be one of the few given the opportunity to meet with Vice Adm. Moore afterwards for the roundtable meet-and-greet,” said Abair. “There is often a perceived barrier between those at the top of the organization and the rest of the employees, but his approachable demeanor and wide range of knowledge on every topic discussed made it clear that we are all part of the same team.”

During the visit, Moore also attended operational briefings, toured NUWC Division Keyport's applied maintenance technology facilities, and Barb Hall, the unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) support facility and home of the newly-established UUV homeport and UUV Squadron 1.

“It’s so humbling to be the commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command and to see the absolutely fantastic work you all do each and every day to support the warfighter,” said Moore. “It was great being able to get back out to the Pacific Northwest. Seeing NUWC Keyport’s innovation and special projects was inspiring.”

While he was in the area, Moore also visited the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility and toured USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

NUWC Division Keyport provides technical capabilities that support America's dominance in the undersea domain. NUWC Division Keyport is headquartered in Washington state, and has facilities and operations in California, Guam, Hawaii, British Columbia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, and personnel working in several other states and countries.
