Training Support Center (TSC) staff/chefs laid their cooking reputations on the line in hopes of being named top rib master at the command Rib Cook Off event Aug. 29.

Nine contestants faced a challenge, including TSC Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Meskimen, presenting tasty submissions to the judging panel, but only one could be named the top purveyor of ribs. Sponsored by TSC Holiday Party Committee, the event judges included command staff members Navy Military Training Instructor (NMTI) Senior Chief Electronics Technician James Brink, LT Dennis Barrett, and Mr. Donald Brunin.

“The event is being held to raise money for the command’s annual holiday party,” said NMTI Quartermaster 1st Class Cheyann Jones, member of the TSC Holiday Party Committee. “We chose the Rib Cook Off because we thought it would be a great event to boost staff moral in the command while raising money in our efforts to hold an awesome holiday party.”

Although the judges felt all the rib entries were tasteful bites, two submission stood out and the winner was chosen in a tiebreaker. The winner of the Rib Cook Off was NMTI Engineman 1st Class Michael Newton, second place went to NMTI Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 2nd Class Benjamin Flynn.

“The judges had a hard choice to make today,” Meskimen said. “But, I my sure they enjoyed their job. What I saw served today looked, smelled and tasted amazing. All cooks and volunteers should be applauded for the work they did.”
