Staff at Center for Surface Combat Systems Unit (CSCSU) Great Lakes spent their free time volunteering at Northern Illinois Food Bank, Jan. 27.

Organized by CSCSU's CPO365 members, a year-round professional development program for first class petty officers, staff and family members donated their time at the food bank's North Suburban Center in Park City.

"We are in the process of adding new and exciting volunteer opportunities for our staff that will have a positive impact to the surrounding areas," said Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Robert Moore, a CSCSU instructor. "The Northern Illinois Food Bank is an organization that has great impact for those who are in need of food assistance."

CSCSU volunteers were tasked with inspecting, sorting and packaging donated food in support of local food banks in 13 northern Illinois counties.

"Personally I enjoy helping out my community," Moore said. "Helping others reminds me that the world doesn't revolve around the doom and gloom you see in the news every day. Volunteering gives a person a certain perspective of how people from all walks of life can come together to meet one common goal. How could you [ever expect] someone in your life to help you if you're not willing to do the same for them?"
