Abraham Lincoln's Copy Boss

05 February 2018

From Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Allen Lee USS Abraham Lincoln Public Affairs

Ronnie Munar, the Xerox ship tech rider, is a retired Sailor who is in charge of the upkeep and management of all ink printers and copiers aboard Abraham Lincoln.
Many Sailors who have served on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier know the amount of paper and printing required to keep up with the fast operational tempo. With the amount of stress put on ink printers aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), the printers require routine maintenance to remain operational.

Ronnie Munar, the Xerox ship tech rider, is a retired Sailor who is in charge of the upkeep and management of all ink printers and copiers aboard Abraham Lincoln.

Munar served 24 years in the Navy before retiring in 2017. In that time, Munar achieved the rank of chief culinary specialist, served aboard nine Navy vessels, completed eight deployments and served as Carrier Strike Group 10 flag mess caterer.

"Since this is my fourth aircraft carrier, it's easy for me to navigate the ship," said Munar. "I already know the Navy lingo and what happens aboard a carrier, so it was easy for me to transition from retiring to working this job. I can really focus on doing my job and not getting lost on the boat because of my Navy background."

Abraham Lincoln has 88 copiers and 225 printers aboard, which are all maintained by Munar. He provides consumable, technical and maintenance support services for all of the ship's printers. Munar routinely checks every printer to make sure they are fully stocked with ink and paper. With the amount of paper running through these printers on a day-to-day basis, the maintenance Munar does is imperative.

"We order on average 54 boxes of paper a month," said Chief Logistics Specialist Kitt Jenest, a Sailor assigned to Abraham Lincoln. "It doesn't sound like a lot, but that's 270,000 sheets of paper. That's a ton of paper."

On top of providing these services, Munar offers training to anyone who wants to learn how to properly operate these printers.

"Ronnie is awesome," said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Tyler Bowen, a Sailor assigned to Abraham Lincoln. "He's really friendly and helpful, he's assisted me and my department a lot with learning how to properly operate our printers, which has saved us countless man hours."

Munar is committed to keeping all of the printers and copiers aboard Abraham Lincoln operational and advises, if a printer is ever down, do not try to fix the problem without first contacting him.

"I'm happy to be aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and look forward to helping out my Navy family even after my retirement from the Navy," said Munar.
