Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East celebrated National Engineers Week, Feb. 18-24, with contests, tours and movie screenings for Department of Defense Education Activity students.

The 2018 theme for National Engineers Week is "Inspiring Wonder."

"This week was full of opportunities for NAVFAC engineers to inspire wonder in the students we interacted with," said Commander, Navy Region Japan Regional Engineer Capt. Michael Kenney Jr. "It's gratifying to see these youths learn and apply engineering concepts. Some of them may end up continuing on to a career in engineering and solving the problems and challenges of the future."

Engineers Week was packed with events for students to learn and experience problem-solving. Teams built aluminum-foil boats to float under loads, paper capsules to protect eggs from a long drop, and stir-stick towers to withstand heavy weights. Hundreds of students watched the film "Dream Big: Engineering Our World." NAVFAC Far East engineers visited classrooms to share their experiences about learning and solving problems. Busloads of students toured base facilities to learn how engineering improves residents' lives and enables the U.S. Navy to accomplish its mission.
