Sailors from USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) won this year's Tembe Carrier Classic Golf Tournament, Oct. 12, at the Aeropines Golf Course at Naval Air Station Oceana.

The tournament is named in honor of Capt. Tushar Tembe, a commanding officer of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) who passed away unexpectedly in 2011. He was also a past Ike executive officer. Each Hampton Roads-based carrier takes turns hosting the event and this year it fell to Ike to host the other carriers.

Ike Sailors played against teams from Truman, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

Before the tournament began, the crowd observed a moment of silence for Tembe. This was followed by a tribute to Tembe where one of his former supply officers from Truman shared some of his fondest memories.

Sailors said the chance to be off the ship and enjoying a sport with others was a great change of pace.

"I've always had a love for the sport," said Information System Specialist 3rd Class Matt Concha. "To be able to honor a commanding officer and spend a day doing what I enjoy, you just can't beat that. It's events like these where the crew comes together and strengthens their comradery."

"It feels really good to come home with a trophy," said Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Kao Tane. "Overall, I didn't do my best, what matters is that I made some new friends and had the opportunity to represent my ship."

Ike is currently undergoing a Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard during the maintenance phase of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan.
