Seabees attached to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay's Public Works Department (PWD) completed the Leeward Seawall Erosion Control Project, Oct. 18.

Over the course of the project, the Seabees removed seven cubic yards of soil overburden, 120 feet of decaying steel wall, and 150 feet of welding. Once the removal process was complete, the Seabees installed more than 120 feet of wooden forms and placed more than 700 feet of reinforcing steel and 16 cubic yards of concrete.

The Leeward Seawall Erosion Control Project preserved 160 feet of leeward shoreline seawall, saving all labor costs by utilizing the Navy Seabee Engineering Service Team. The project also provided the installation with the potential of a jet-dock installation for private vessels and small craft operations. If approved by the commanding officer and the public works officer, this will be a future project to be completed at a later date.

Utilitiesman 1st Class Kyle Ciopryna, PWD operations leading petty officer, wanted to recognize the hard work of Engineering Aide 2nd Class Johnathon Grantham, project supervisor; Builder S2nd Class Caleb Monplaisir, crew leader; Builder 1st Class Jody Holland, quality control inspector; and Builder Constructionman Logan Weber, safety inspector, for their dedication to duty and tireless work ethic that they displayed throughout the long hours of work in high temperatures required to complete the project.

It is common to see PWD and the Seabees working on various projects around the base on any given day. One of their next major projects is the NAVSTA N300 Utility Renovation, which will require the planned/managed removal and refurbishing of an existing 400 gallon tank/stand for use for non-potable water supply, demolition of existing galvanized steel plumbing from structure, and installation of new plastic CPVC supply lines with 3/4 horsepower booster pump to all new fixtures. This upcoming project will increase positive relations during bi-monthly, diplomatic meetings of the naval station's triad and Cuban military/nationals.
