Naval Facilities Engineering Command Far East awarded a $6.5 million contract for major renovations to Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) on board Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, Oct. 27.

Energy-saving upgrades will be a focus of the renovations to the 36-year-old Bldg. 1475, which houses 250 Sailors.

"The award of this project is a significant part of a comprehensive program to renovate the BEQs across the installation, with an intentional focus on improving the quality of life for Sailors stationed here," said Public Works Officer Cmdr. Jason Wood.

The project will replace all lights with energy-efficient fixtures, install key-card activated energy conservation systems in all units, and replace all windows to make them both anti-terrorism/force protection compliant and energy-efficient.

Other major upgrades include repairs of all walls and roofing systems, replacing all wastewater piping and some hot water piping. All bathrooms, kitchenettes and laundry areas, HVAC system and information technology systems will also be restored.

The contract was awarded to Nippi Kosan Co., LTD, and work is scheduled to be completed in March 2019.
