U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay held a Process Improvement Fair, Oct. 19, at the hospital.

During the event, posters were on display explaining effective processes used to ensure optimum safety during patient care.

"Our aim is zero harm," said Jasmine Todman, quality manager, USNHGB. She said the fair provides an opportunity to display how staff is working to achieve that goal.

While the fair is an annual event, process improvement is a daily task. The initiative allows staff to evaluate steps taken to perform duties and suggest a change if a better process is possible. This daily attentiveness is given to everything from ordering supplies to scheduling a medical evacuation.

During the fair, staff and visitors voted on submitted presentations. The postpartum care for medical surgical caregiver poster, entered by the multi-service ward, won first place. The ultrasound IV access training for emergency department staff display, submitted by the emergency department, won second place, and the travel letter of recommendation for routine medical evacuation referrals off-island presentation, submitted by patient administration department, took third place. Additionally, operating room supply process, submitted by main operating room, was selected as most creative presentation and the postpartum care for the medical surgical caregiver poster won the People's Choice Award.

Capt. J.C. Nicholson, commanding officer, USNHGB, thanked the participants and expressed confidence in the team.

"It is clear from the presentations that there is a real understanding and commitment to patient safety and the concepts of high reliability in our hospital," said Nicholson.

Cmdr. Darla Dietrich, director for administration, USNHGB, advised the fair was a great opportunity to ensure everyone is prepared in an emergency.
