SLC Selects Top Instructors for 2017

The Submarine Learning Center (SLC) announced its 2017 Instructors of the Year Nov. 3.
The Submarine Learning Center (SLC) announced its 2017 Instructors of the Year Nov. 3.

The awards program recognizes those Navy instructors who exemplify personal excellence and display outstanding instructional and leadership performance from across the SLC domain.

SLC Commanding Officer Capt. Andrew Jarrett praised all those nominated by their training sites in this year's competition, and lauded those chosen.

"Our Instructors of the Year are the finest from an exceptionally talented field of applicants who epitomize the dedication and professionalism of instructors found at every training site in the SLC," said Jarrett. "These exceptional instructors deliver world-class training to the fleet and embody the Navy core values, equal opportunity and personal as well as professional accountability."

Those selected are:

Officer Instructor of the Year
Lt. Christopher Dematteo
Submarine Learning Facility Norfolk

Senior Enlisted Instructor of the Year
Missile Technician Senior Chief (Submarine Qualified) Steven Parr
Trident Training Facility, Bangor, Washington

Mid-Grade Enlisted Instructor of the Year
Electronics Technician Submarines First Class (Submarine Qualified) Benjamin Becraft
Trident Training Facility, Bangor, Washington

Junior Enlisted Instructor of the Year
Machinist's Mate Weapons Second Class (Submarine Qualified) Erick Simpson
Naval Submarine School, Groton, Connecticut

"Not only are they subject matter experts and superlative instructors but also great leaders and mentors," said Jarrett. "I salute their outstanding contributions and continued superb performance."

All four will represent the SLC for consideration as Naval Education and Training Command 2017 Instructors of the Year. Nomination packages highlight a nominee's accomplishments, community involvement, and personal and professional growth.

The Submarine Learning Center's mission is to create, coordinate and execute the future training and education vision for the Submarine Force. It is accountable for all undersea curriculums, training delivery methodologies, and for developing and maintaining professional development continuums for all undersea warfare officers and ratings to include electronics technician (communications and navigation), fire control technician, sonar technician, machinist's mate (auxiliary and weapons), missile technician, and all nuclear training ratings.
