Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (CNE-CNA) Adm. James Foggo III visited Naval Station Rota and spoke with Sailors from the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Carney (DDG 64) and USS Ross (DDG 71) Nov. 7.

This was Foggo's first visit to Rota in his current role. During his visit, Foggo met with the crew of both ships and held an all hands call aboard Ross.

During the all hands call he emphasized the seriousness of a Sailor's duty as a watch stander as well as the importance of safety, teamwork and accountability to each other.

"We operate in a tough neighborhood and this is a dangerous business," said Foggo. "We need to look out for one another. It's all about team; it's everybody on the ship. You're only as good as the weakest link. That's why you have to ask for help."

Foggo complimented the Sailors on a job well done during their recent patrol and encouraged them to continue their superb performance.

"It doesn't matter what rank you are," said Foggo. "You can be a seaman aboard this ship and still have the most important job as the lookout. Make sure you're talking to your officer of the deck and letting them know that contact is coming dangerously close.

CNE-CNA Fleet Master Chief Raymond Kemp supported Foggo's message about being a team player and continuing to improve as watch standers.

"Our Sailors understand their role and their mission," said Kemp. "The fact of the matter is that being a Sailor is hard, but what I happen to know is that FDNF (forward-deployed Naval forces) Europe Sailors are absolutely fit to fight. We are living by the watch standing principles, holding each other accountable, and standing a watch in a fashion that is bold and courageous enough to step up and say something when things don't appear to be going right."

Naval Station Rota enables and supports operations of U.S. and allied forces and provides quality services in support of the fleet, fighter and family for Commander, Navy Installations Command in Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia.
