Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Headquarters hosted a Leadership Seminar Series presentation and discussion on opioid addiction in the United States, May 25.

Ms. Emily Harman, director, Navy Office of Small Business Programs, addressed the audience of NAVSUP and other staff, to raise awareness of the magnitude and devastation that substance abuse causes in the community.

Attendees learned the signs of usage, what to do in the case of an overdose, and how to locate resources available in the local community.

Every day, more than 90 Americans die after overdosing on opioids, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The misuse of and addiction to opioids - including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl - is a serious national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare.

"We need to change the stigma attached to addiction, and people with addiction need to get help for their disease," said Harman. "Remember when it comes to substance abuse, whether a user, friend, family member or co-worker, everyone suffers."

Harman provided prevention advice and suggested support resources, including the NIDA web site, www.drugabuse.gov.
