After a long day underway, finding ways to wind down and relax becomes crucial to mission readiness and self-care.

Sailors can do this by participating in board game night in the forward mess decks aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77).

As the evening continues, a tinge of nostalgia becomes apparent amongst the smiles, laughter, and competitive banter.

"It's a really nice way to meet new people," said Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Dustin Koser. "It also raises morale pretty well by giving people a place to wind down."

Koser has been playing Magic the Gathering at the event for a majority of deployment, a game he picked up just before going underway.

"It keeps me on edge and makes me think strategically," said Koser. "Although it's a small thing, board game night is definitely something I look forward to."

For Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Stacie Nowak and Aviation Machinist's Mate 3rd Class Richard Stairs, board game night is an entirely new experience.

"I think it's pretty sweet," said Stairs. "It gives us something to do after work that's not boring and provides a fun break."

Between the two Sailors was a critical game of Connect-4, one which Nowak was winning at, a point she did not hesitate to add.

"It's very entertaining, and I enjoy playing all the games," said Nowak. "It provides a lot of laughter and it's a period of time that I'm not worrying about work."

There are a lot of games to choose from, including Connect-4, Magic the Gathering, checkers, chess and Scrabble.

Both Stairs and Nowak agree that although the games are simple, it's a lot of fun to hang out and play.

All Sailors are welcome to participate every Wednesday at 2000 in the forward mess decks.
