USS James E. Williams Visits Kiel, Germany for Kiel Week

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) arrived in Kiel, Germany June 16 for a scheduled port visit, following the conclusion of exercise BALTOPS 2017 and to participate in Kiel Week.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) arrived in Kiel, Germany June 16 for a scheduled port visit, following the conclusion of exercise BALTOPS 2017 and to participate in Kiel Week.

The ship's port visit serves to enhance U.S.-Germany relations as the two nations work together for a stable, secure and prosperous Europe.

BALTOPS is an annual joint, multinational maritime-focused exercise executed by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO and designed to improve training value for participants, enhance flexibility and interoperability, and demonstrate resolve among allied and partner forces defending the Baltic Sea region. Maritime, ground, and air forces participated to strengthen their combined capabilities to ensure regional stability.

James E. Williams' participation in BALTOPS 17 is a demonstration of our continued commitment to the collective security in the region. The visit during Kiel Week enhances our enduring relationship with Germany and the citizens of Kiel.

Kiel Week is an annual maritime festival event held in Kiel, Germany and is considered to be the largest event of its type in the world, attracting millions of visitors each year. While in Kiel the Sailors aboard the ships, along with many of our NATO allies and partners, will participate in Kiel Week events, strengthening our enduring relationships throughout the North Atlantic and European region.

BALTOPS 17, which took place June 1-17, is the premier annual maritime-focused exercise in the Baltic Region and one of the largest exercises in Northern Europe.

James E. Williams conducted a wide-range of combined maritime security operations during BALTOPS 17 including anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction and air defense.
