The guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61), a component of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10, conducted a change of command ceremony pier side June 15.

Capt. Dave Stoner assumed command of Monterey from Capt. Chris DeGregory.

More than 50 family members and guests attended the ceremony, including Rear Adm. James J. Malloy, commander of CSG 10.

"Capt. Chris DeGregory was my eyes and ears on the frontlines when I could not be there," said Malloy. "I knew I had an outstanding warfighter with innovation, sound judgment, and commitment to excellence with him here. He led the innovation of integrating a ballistic missile defense (BMD) ship into a strike group with great results".

DeGregory assumed command of Monterey at the conclusion of the maintenance phase and led the command during a condensed basic phase, CSG's composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX) and a seven and a half month deployment to the 5th and 6th Fleet Area of Operations (AOO).

DeGregory commented on his appreciation for the officers, chiefs and Sailors of Monterey.

"I am truly honored and humbled to stand in front of the most incredible and resilient crew on the waterfront," said DeGregory. "You guys are truly incredible. I would go to war with you any day."

DeGregory will report to CSG-4 in Norfolk, Va.

Stoner commented on what a great mentor and friend DeGregory was to him and how he set a high standard for commanding Monterey.

"It is hard to follow an outstanding commanding officer who is so highly respected on the waterfront and revered by his crew" said Stoner.

Stoner previously commanded the Arleigh-Burke guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage (DDG 61).

Monterey is in the sustainment phase as CSG-10's BMD Commander.
