A Daisy Grows in Salt Water

Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Daisy Romero has hit the deckplates running and shown a level of motivation that any Sailor can appreciate.
Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Daisy Romero has hit the deckplates running and shown a level of motivation that any Sailor can appreciate.

Romero, who hails from Oklahoma, is the second oldest sibling of three girls and one boy. She joined the military originally on the desires of her mother.

"My mother always wanted to join the Navy, but had children really young, so she never had the chance," said Romero. "My stepfather showed us all how to build and fix things, so I joined as a machinist's mate and later when my sister enlisted, she became a Seabee."

However, Romero eventually found that the engineering life was not for her. When she put in her C-WAY package, Romero requested to cross rate to logistics specialist.

"I was previously in reactor auxiliary division," said Romero. "I chose machinist's mate because I thought I would be fixing machines, but I didn't fully understand the rate. I'm more cut out to be an LS."

Romero explained her duties in S-8 division's Main 2 work center.

"I'm the work center supervisor for Main 2," said Romero. "I joined this division back in March and they've already put me in charge of leading junior Sailors. We do inventory, issue parts, the big thing, though, is inventory. We have to have at least 95% accuracy as per TYCOM's requirements. We usually keep our inventory accuracy around 97 or 99 percent."

Romero has made great strides in her naval career. She has earned her Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist pins and is on track to earn the Information Warfare pin as well. Romero's supervisors speak highly of her work ethic and motivation.

"Romero was originally an MM," said Chief Logistics Specialist Kawme Johns. "She just cross-rated to LS and she's a hard charger. Rarely do you see someone who really loves the job and embraces it."

Johns expressed confidence in Romero's ability to achieve her goals in the Navy and commended her ability to inspire her shipmates.

"I have no doubt that Romero will excel wherever she works," said Johns. "I'm sure someday I'm going to retire, and I'm going to see Master Chief Romero doing whatever she does. She said her goal was to be a senior chief, so I said why not go all the way and be a master chief. The fact she has that kind of drive really helps motivate the other Sailors to enjoy what they do."

Despite being only a 3rd class petty officer, Romero has already become a work center supervisor, and thus is in charge of junior Sailors, mainly seamen and airmen temporarily assigned to supply department.

"Romero knows her stuff," said Airman Godfrey Torrejos. "She can be counted on to answer your question or find the answer if she doesn't know it."

Sometimes it takes a little time for someone to find their place, and Romero found hers among the inventory lists and tool drawers of supply department. This Daisy not only grows in salt water, but flourishes in it.
