Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Norfolk provided logistics support to the ships that deployed August 31 to support federal, state and local authorities' ongoing relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

According to NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Commanding Officer Capt. Jim Lowther, the support included the orders, deliveries and loading of food, cargo and medical supplies for the ships deploying, as well as pack-up kits (PUK) for helicopter squadrons that deployed earlier in the week.

"I am extremely proud of our team for their quick and professional support to the units that are deploying to Texas to support the hurricane relief efforts," he said. "This is just the latest example of how NAVSUP FLC Norfolk provides full-spectrum support to the fleet each and every day."

The ships deploying included the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), the dock landing ship USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), and the dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS William McLean (T-AKE-12), while the PUKs were provided for helicopter squadrons HSC-28, HSC 7, HM-14 and HM-15.

NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Logistics Support Center (LSC) Deputy Director Barbara Robinson says the LSC is positioned to flex to the needs of the units that are deploying on short notice. She explained that under normal operations a ship is assigned a logistics support representative (LSR), but in urgent situations like this, the entire LSC team pitches in.

"Every LSR has to know that they might be called upon to support a team member in support of the mission," she said. "Our team immediately adapts their schedules to know that 'hours of operation' equal the 'time it takes to complete the mission' and we internally support each other so that even if key people are pulled away due to some other critical or unforeseen occurrence, the support to the ship continues without any, or minimal disruption."

She added that the daily mission of the LSC is to be the shore supply team to the fleet with the goal to take the workload off of the ship so that the crew can train more effectively and efficiently in their specific rates.

"We are always ready to adapt and adjust our support to meet the needs of our ships," she added. "We share the load and work as a unit to expedite all information and operations."

According to LSC Director Lt. Tam Colbert, the LSC coordinated the deliveries of 358 pallets of food, valued at $612,000, along with 89 pallets of cargo and three truckloads of medical supplies.

"There is no way we could have accomplished this short-fused major loadout without you," said Kearsarge Assistant Supply Officer Lt. Cmdr. Justin T. DeVoe. "Please know that your efforts will absolutely help make a difference in Texas."
