Navy Information Operations Detachment (NIOD) Groton hosted Rear Adm. James Pitts, commander of Undersea Warfighting Development Center (UWDC), for a site visit, Jan. 13.

During the visit, Pitts learned more about the detachment's mission and toured the maintenance operations floor. Detachment leadership also discussed the important role information warfare plays in submarine operations and relayed how they can assist in future initiatives and collaboration between the communities.

"We're excited to work with the Undersea Warfighting Development Center because submarines play a critical role in information warfare by providing unique capabilities that we can't get from anywhere else," said Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Haag, officer in charge at NIOD Groton. "As our adversaries get smarter, information warfare and submarine warfare will be working more closely together to keep our Navy ahead of the challenges we'll face through 2020 and beyond."

NIOD Groton is subordinate to Navy Information Operations Command Norfolk, and aligns under Task Force 1030 and ultimately U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet.

U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy's Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an echelon II command.

U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, information operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
