Naval Support Activity Washington held a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 1 to celebrate renovations of the Visitor Control Center (VCC) at the Washington Navy Yard.

Updates benefit both employees and the customers they support. "The visitor control center has not been upgraded in over a decade," said Shawnise Young, Visitor Control Center manager. "So these improvements were long overdue."

The renovation process of the VCC was done in two phases that began last year in November 2016 and ended in January 2017.

Phase I of the renovation process included new paint and carpet throughout the entire building and a new tile floor in the kitchen and conference area. By mid-December of 2016 Phase II started with the installation of a new bullet proof glass partition and countertop workstation for employees.

"The protective glass was installed to protect the safety of the staff as well as make the lobby area more friendly and functional," said Young. "We were also able to procure filing cabinets, conference tables and other items from a partnering tenant command at no cost."

A plaque depicting the history of the VCC is an added addition to the facility that was personally designed by Young. The plaque hangs on the wall upon the entrance of the VCC. "We just want our visitors to know how long our building has been existence and about its operation through the years on the Washington Navy Yard," added Young.

After a several months of limited services during renovations, Young and her team are very excited to continue to serve the Washington Navy Yard with daily services such as providing contract services distribution through Rapid Gate and Defense Biometric Identification System or DBIDS, Common Access Card (CAC) support and issuance of visitor and parking passes in their newly updated facility.

The Washington Navy Yard Visitor Center Control is also one of the first U.S. Navy's Net Zero buildings. It features the latest in energy efficiency and energy renewable technology.

The Visitor Center Control is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m., while the CAC office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
