Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Pacific Commander Rear Adm. John Korka presented NAVFAC's 2017 Peggy B. Craig Lifetime Achievement Award to Irwin Komoda, NAVFAC Hawaii maintenance superintendent, March 4, at the 75th Seabee Anniversary Ball held at the Hale Koa Hotel, Waikiki.

Only two NAVFAC employees were selected to receive this career service award in 2017 -- Irwin, and Marie Taitano, NAVFAC Marianas performance assessment representative.

"I am extremely proud of Irwin, a true professional, who always has the best interest of his people at heart," said Capt. Richard Hayes III, NAVFAC Hawaii commanding officer. "He takes great pride in NAVFAC Hawaii and has significantly contributed to the command and the U.S. Navy throughout his long career."

Irwin was recognized for his expert professional knowledge and technical abilities. He worked his way up from an entry-level position 43 years ago to his current position as maintenance superintendent. His efforts in this role significantly improved service call response and recurring maintenance execution rates, reducing a large backlog while balancing the workload across 16 shops with an integrated workforce of 297 civilians and 55 military personnel.

"Irwin has demonstrated time and time again that he is committed to upholding NAVFAC's reputation as the Navy and Marine Corps' service provider of choice," said Dan McNair, NAVFAC Hawaii production officer and acting deputy public works director. "He does this by making sure people come first and accomplishing the mission always."

The award is named after Peggy B. Craig, who retired from NAVFAC in 2011 after serving 48 years in federal civil service. It is given each year to devoted professionals who best personify a career of service, selflessness, and dedication to NAVFAC, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering, or any subordinate units.

"This recognition was such a surprise," said Komoda, "and I am humbled and appreciative of this particular award. I have always just tried to do my job the best I could. My advice to current and future employees is to come to work on time, accept responsibility for our mission requirements and that of our customers, work safely, appreciate your co-workers, and take pride in your work and accomplishments."
