With the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) approaching in May, Sailors aboard aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) are working diligently to ensure they are up to the Navy's standards.

The PFA is a semiannual event which tests Sailors' physical readiness and ability to maintain mission-essential preparedness. Guiding the crew in this required endeavor are the coordinators and facilitators of the PFA program, command fitness leaders (CFLs).

"CFLs work is to set an example and to ensure the command is fit and ready," said Lt. j.g. Michelle Wogu, Ike's senior CFL. "Staying in shape is part of your job in the military because you have to be physically ready when called upon to be part of the fight."

Excelling on the PFA can improve Sailors' evaluations and work as a confidence booster to increase individual and crew morale. Conversely, a failure can negatively impact a Sailor's career. Repeated failures can and usually will result in a Sailor's discharge from the Navy.

Wogu stressed the benefits and consequences the Navy administers should not be the only incentive for staying in shape. Instead, she encourages Sailors to seek the therapeutic effects of working out and the sense of personal accomplishment which comes with getting fit.

"I've always been into fitness since I joined the Navy, so when I came here and saw the opportunity to become involved I did," she said. "Fitness isn't about rank or position. It's you, your mind and body, and it's every Sailor's responsibility. Being in this position keeps me motivated and allows me to help people understand and achieve their fitness goals."

More detailed information on PFA standards can be found in OPNAV 6110 or by speaking to a departmental CFL.

"Now is when Sailors should make sure they ready," Wogu said. "When I receive the 10-week notice, I start practicing my pushups and sit-ups. If I'm going to run, I practice running; if I choose to use the bike, I practice that. Through OPNAV 6110 they should be able to see what is required for their age group. If 50 pushups are required, then start doing 50 pushups a day."
