Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded a $6.3 million contract to improve living conditions for unaccompanied sailors at Camp Shields, Okinawa, Japan March 22.

Five bachelor enlisted quarters (BEQ), which house more than 100 deployed Naval Mobile Construction Unit personnel, will see interior and exterior upgrades. The project will be managed by Public Works Department (PWD) Okinawa.

"I'm extremely proud of the effort our team put into this project," said Public Works Officer Lt. Caroline Mayer. "PWD Okinawa's project development, design, acquisition, and construction oversight teams worked closely together to prepare the project and award the contract. This will greatly benefit the quality of life for unaccompanied sailors living on Camp Shields, who support the Navy mission on Okinawa every day."

The quarters were built in 1970-71 and have deteriorated due to normal use. Each BEQ has 22 rooms with private toilets and baths. Work will include repairing floor finishes, wall bases and finishes, ceilings, doors, frames and plumbing fixtures. The HVAC duct system will be cleaned and an outside air unit will be installed to ensure positive pressure in the living quarters. A detached mechanical room serving the five buildings will also see upgrades.

The $6,288,183 contract was awarded to Fuji Construction Co., Ltd. Work is scheduled for completion in November 2018.
