Fifteen Sailors from Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego participated in a volunteer project to clean the Forester Creek in Santee, California, March 18.

The event was part of the Clean and Green River Cleanup initiative to prevent trash and debris from polluting the San Diego River. The IWTC San Diego volunteers joined 64 community members to remove 2,500 pounds of trash from one of the river's major tributaries.

"It feels great to get out here and help clean all this debris out of the river that could possibly contaminate our water," said Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Arlene Surun. "This is a good opportunity for us to not only give back to San Diego, but also to the environment."

San Diego River Park Foundation, who organizes the event, is responsible for preservation of the river and improving quality of life for communities in the area. IWTC San Diego Sailors routinely volunteer to help keep the river and its ecosystems in good health.

"We are always so grateful for the service of our veteran and active duty military volunteers," said Tiffany Swiderski, a representative for the San Diego River Park Foundation. "Their dedication to improving the health of the San Diego River is truly inspiring."

IWTC San Diego, as part of the CIWT organization, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare (IW) across the full spectrum of military operations.
