Sailors and Marines assigned to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story participated in a community relations project at Shelton Park Elementary in Virginia Beach, April 6.

Sailors and Marines assigned to Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, Expeditionary Warfighting Development Center, Assault Craft Unit 4, Coastal Riverine Group 2, Expeditionary Support Unit 2, Marine Corps Forces Command, Marine Air Control Squadron 24 and Marine Aircraft Group 49 participated in the day-long COMREL.

Service members assisted with the field day for more than 200 kindergartens through fifth grade students. The day included helping students navigate an obstacle course inside the gym and playing games outside.

"I loved volunteering at this event," said Gas Turbine System Mechanical Technician 2nd class Edwards, who is assigned to EXWDC. "It was so much fun interacting with the kids, especially since we learned 85 percent of the children have a military family member."

Tara Brewer, the principal at Shelton Park Elementary School appreciated the support provided by the military members especially with approximately 70 percent of the students attending the elementary school are connected to the military in some capacity.

"I think this is one of the many reasons why our students benefit from seeing military personnel volunteering in our school with students," said Brewer. "For our students, the volunteers serve as a representation of their family members that are deployed, standing watch, or fighting for our country. The volunteers not only represent family members but they also serve as positive role models for students."

The recent COMREL was scheduled during the Month of the Military Child, which is observed every April.

"Everyone always says 'it takes a village' to raise a child. I think the military community truly knows this," added Brewer.

The event lasted the entire school day and Operations Specialist 1st class McQueen from NECC remarked the field day was "super fun and exciting ... more for the Sailors than the children."
