The Seaman-to-Admiral (STA-21) program is one of several programs enlisted Sailors can utilize to earn a commission.

The deadline to apply for STA-21 is July 1 and it provides an opportunity for highly motivated enlisted USS George H.W. Bush Sailors to receive a college education and a commission.

"STA-21 is open to just about anyone, whether the candidate is a first-year seaman or a seasoned chief," said PSC Christopher Smith, GHWB's educational service office (ESO) leading chief petty officer. "Anybody can apply as long as they meet the core requirements, which varies depending on the candidate's career field."

The STA-21 program encourages Sailors throughout all commands to submit applications for fiscal year 2018. Should the candidate be accepted, they have up to three years to earn an undergraduate degree at a university of their choice before returning to the fleet as a commissioned officer in their respective career field.

"This is a great program because it is open to those with some or no college experience," said Smith. "Sailors get to earn an education and a commission while keeping their full pay, allowances and any benefits while at school."

Some of the general requirements for STA-21 candidates are required to meet to be eligible are: be a U.S citizen, be recommended by the their commanding officer as having good moral character, be either active duty or in the Reserves and have no military or civilian convictions.

"Anyone who applies must meet the minimum combined SAT score of 1000 or a combined ACT score of 41," said Smith. "They must also be physically fit. All these requirements and more can be referenced in OPNAVINST 1420.1B."

For officers like Lt. Cmdr. Olivia Degenkolb, who earned her commission through the STA-21 program, the program represents one of the best opportunities for Sailors to advance their naval careers.

"The STA-21 program gives your best and brightest the opportunity to pursue an education and a unique career path in the Navy," said Degenkolb. "I love the program because it gives Sailors who are motivated and dedicated the chance to go from whatever point they are in their career now and move forward to achieving their goals sooner rather than later."
