Sailors attached to the amphibious-assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) began their Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) fundraiser with a kick-off event Sept. 28.

The mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

"It really is a great program where we enable our own Sailors to give to very worthy causes," said Capt. Larry Getz, commanding officer. "A lot of people won't know what CFC is, but your job is to remind them about their opportunity to give to these causes."

The campaign is open to all military, federal civilians and Postal employees locally and abroad, with more than 2,500 different charities under the CFC to donate to.

"Kearsarge did extraordinarily well last year, and so we have set our target goal even higher this year," said Getz. "It's good for our Sailors to take this chance to give back, and that's what is so great about this program."

One of the objectives this year for the Kearsarge CFC team is to promote giving back to the Hampton Roads community.

"Last year's Hampton Roads area CFC campaign raised more than three million dollars, and 850,000 dollars of that came right back to our community," said Chief Petty Officer Adam Dickson, command CFC coordinator. "This is money donated by Sailors that came come back to directly benefit our Sailors. A little bit of money each month goes a long way."

CFC's slogan promotes a new focus for the year's fundraising efforts.

"This year's campaign slogan is 'Show Some Love,'" said Dickson. "It means helping to raise and provide money for the community, it might mean supporting each other, and it means developing future generations."
