After 15 years of leading the Navy's marksmanship program, Cmdr. Mick Glancey of Navy Personnel Command (PERS-832) passed the baton to Cmdr. Jon Marvell of U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

Glancey retired Sept. 30 after 35 years of enlisted and commissioned naval service.

He is a double distinguished shooter, having earned both the Navy Distinguished Marksman and Navy Distinguished Pistol Shot badges. He is one of five members in the entire Navy on active duty who earned both Navy distinguished badges. He also earned the President's Hundred Brassard for Rifle, earning a spot as one of the top 100 shooters in the nation in 2004.

Glancey won the 2015 Interservice 1,000-yard Match in match rifle division, being the top 1,000-yard shooter of all military services -- the first time a Navy shooter had done so in four decades. He also won the 2016 All Navy (East) 1,000-yard Match and led Navy to a second place finish in the 2016 Interservice Infantry Trophy Match, beating teams from both the Army Marksmanship Unit and the Marine Corps.

Glancey has trained command marksmanship teams at Navy Personnel Command, aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Navy Cyber Forces Command, and Officer Training Command Pensacola. His command teams have earned the Atlantic Fleet Rifle Team Championship Trophy twice and the Atlantic Fleet Pistol Team Championship three times. In 2012, Glancey received the Mark McAndrew Award for his dedication in supporting the new shooters.

"I started shooting with the Navy when I was enlisted standing petty officer of the watch, security alert teams and ASROC (Anti-Submarine Rocket) in 1983," said Glancey. "I qualified with the 1911A1, M-14 and 12-gauge shotgun. I didn't start shooting competitively until I got commissioned in 1994 and started with the Navy Shooting Team and my mentor, Master Chief Paul Angelicchio. What I know today about marksmanship versus what I thought I knew back then is so vastly different."

"From serving two ground combat tours with Marines -- first in Kandahar, Afghanistan right after 9/11, to a one-year tour in Fallujah, Iraq in 2006 -- the skills I developed through training and competing with the USNMT gave me the confidence and honed my competence in small arms marksmanship," said Glancey.

Glancey also endured an almost total loss of funding and equipment support for the team during the massive budget cuts of fiscal year 2013's sequestration.

"The USNMT is run by an all-volunteer staff which has been the key to keeping our program moving forward, despite the lack of
funding through the recent years," Glancey said.

Marvell has been a competitive Navy shooter since 2005 and earned his distinguished pistol badge in 2015.

"I am completely humbled and honored to take over leading USNMT from Commander Glancey," said Marvell. "He has been the fiercest competitor and teammate on and off the range, and led the team through some of the most challenging periods it ever faced. On behalf of the many USNMT members I say a sincere 'thank you and well done' to Mick. The Navy Marksmanship Team wouldn't be what it is without his dedication and leadership. His unwavering commitment to the USNMT, the Navy, and our nation set the standard high -- I will do everything in my ability to maintain that standard."

"My focus will continue to be on safety and fostering new shooters," continued Marvell. "The USNMT is always looking for Sailors of any rating or background interested in small arms marksmanship. Our website, www.USNMT.org, contains links to connect to the match staff for both coasts and our Facebook page is a valuable resource for connecting with USNMT members and events. In 2017, we will also emphasize the team -- developing and implementing advanced training programs and other policy changes to fuel continuous improvement of the individuals and teams that represent the Navy at interservice and national competitions."
