Generations of Sailors, from as far back as World War II, came together to observe the Navy's Birthday at the Veterans Home of California, located in Chula Vista, Oct. 13.

The celebration was organized by military personnel at Naval Information Forces' (NAVIFOR) West Coast office, allowing NAVIFOR West's active-duty personnel and the home's residents to share stories and enjoy a cake-cutting celebration.

"We are here today, serving in the greatest Navy in the world because of your efforts," said Lt. Cmdr. Henry Martinez, NAVIFOR West's Cyber Security Training officer, speaking to the veterans in the audience. "You helped lay the groundwork for success and professionalism and we're so proud to follow in your footsteps."

Speaking to this year's theme, "America's Sailor: For 241 Years Tough, Bold, and Ready;" Martinez highlighted the need to learn from history and embrace the wisdom, determination, and perseverance of our forbearers.

Having an opportunity to engage with the veterans and hear their stories was an insightful opportunity for the younger Sailors.

"I bet you want to know where I was on Dec. 7, 1941," said Ron Fox, a retired Navy pilot. "Well, I was in boot camp in San Diego; that afternoon, the instructors lined us all up on the golf course and handed us rifles -- they told us if we see a plane fly over, shoot it."

Stories like this were plentiful during the visit, an opportunity to learn about the country's history first-hand.

"I wasn't exactly sure what to expect today, but I'm so appreciative of the opportunity to interact with many veterans who shared amazing stories; it was a really great learning experience and a wonderful way to celebrate the Navy's birthday," said Petty Officer 1st Class Brandon Busby, a Sailor from NAVIFOR West's Training and Assist Visit team. "Being surrounded by my military predecessors from all branches, I realized that younger service members should seek out opportunities like this to learn about our past."

NAVIFOR's mission is to support operational commanders ashore and afloat by providing combat-ready information warfare forces, which are forward deployable, fully trained, properly manned and capably equipped.
