Students from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School returned to Naval Supply Systems Command Global Logistics Support (NAVSUP GLS) for a second consecutive year to observe firsthand the world-class logistics capabilities of the U.S. Navy in San Diego Nov. 8.

"Our Wharton business students are honored to be partnering with NAVSUP GLS for the second year in a row to learn firsthand of the world-class logistics, maintenance, and fleet support processes that keep the Navy running," said Wharton Professor of Manufacturing and Logistics, Morris Cohen.

"The unique challenges the Navy faces, operating around the world and around the clock, ready for any contingency at any given moment -- that presents a perfect, textbook case study example for our students to identify, examine, and learn from the complexities involved," said Cohen.

The students spent the day with the Navy visiting supply and logistics organizations at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, and at the Naval Base Point Loma Old Town Complex. The day's activities included a brief by the Supply Department of Naval Special Warfare Group 1 Logistics Support Unit (LOGSU-1), and a 3-D parts printing demonstration at Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Systems Center Pacific.

In addition, the students took a tour of the base galley at Naval Air Station North Island, and as the highlight of the visit, students received a tour of guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59) at the Naval Station San Diego 32nd Street waterfront.

"It's a privilege for NAVSUP GLS to host students from the Wharton School of Business for a second year in a row," said Lt. Cmdr. Gavan Aldridge, NAVSUP GLS Logistics and Management Program Office Code 41. "What we expose the students to by means of Navy engagement and physical presentation, we gain back in understanding of business acumen and techniques that are taught to our civilian counterpart businesses leaders."

The Navy tours and discussions were for Master's of Business Administration (MBA) candidates at Wharton West as part of a course on evolving operations strategies for sourcing manufacturing, distributing products, and delivering services with a focus on enhancing quality, productivity, and flexibility. During the course, students toured various companies and organizations in the U.S. and Mexico including Google, Costco, Boeing, and Amazon.

NAVSUP GLS provides global logistics for a global Navy. The organization is made up of more than 6,300 military and civilian logistics professionals operating from 105 locations worldwide, providing an extensive array of integrated global logistics and contracting services to Navy, Marine Corps, joint operational units and allied forces across all warfare enterprises.
