Sailors from littoral combat ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) participated in a community service event at The Food Bank Singapore in Tanjong Pagar Distripark, Singapore, Dec. 21.

Sailors spent the morning sorting, stacking and conducting inventory of food that had been donated from the local population, so it could soon be dispersed to the community.

"I have participated in multiple community service events and find a lot of satisfaction in helping the community in Singapore," said Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Lianna Wagner. "It was also nice to be able to work alongside people I don't normally interact with being part of the aviation detachment on board Coronado. "

The Food Bank Singapore was founded in 2012 by two siblings after they realized there was a demand to organize food donations in order to reach more of those in need. Along with two other volunteers, the siblings opened the bank, making resources and supplies available through school programs, food pantries, soup kitchens and other nonprofit organizations.

This was the third time members of the U.S. Navy have helped at the food bank, according to Jo-an Choo, management assistant at The Food Bank of Singapore.

"The Navy has been very supportive in volunteering their time at our organization," said Choo. "I just want to say thank you so much and we look forward to working with you again in the future."

Community service events provide Sailors with the opportunity to help the local community while also learning about the local culture. An upcoming volunteer opportunity at a local food kitchen, Dec. 27, will allow the Coronado crew to continue helping others in Singapore during the current in-port period.

The first Independence-variant LCS to deploy to 7th Fleet as part of an initiative to deploy multiple LCS to the Indo-Asia-Pacific region in just a few years, Coronado is a fast and agile warship tailor-made to patrol the region's littorals and work hull-to-hull with partner navies, providing 7th Fleet with the flexible capabilities it needs now and in the future.
